Maldon Oyster Festival


Maldon Oyster FestivalThe Maldon Oyster Festival is a feast of local seafood, local wines and beers and gives people the opportunity to sample local produce provided by companies such as the Maldon Oyster and Seafood Company.

The Maldon Oyster Company was first established in 1960.  A hard winter followed in 1963 and most of the oyster beds in Essex were destroyed by ice.  A few years later The Maldon Oyster Company successfully grew several million Pacific oysters in Goldhanger Creek and a small amount of flat oysters in the Blackwater River.

The Maldon Oyster Company manages 3500 acres of the Blackwater River of late and is one of the largest UK producers of Pacific oysters.  The company were also the first shell fish farm awarded Organic status in the UK by the Organic Food Federation in July 2003.

The Maldon Oyster Company supply their famous oysters to restaurants and markets throughout the UK, including the popular Billingsgate Fish Market in London.   Exports are also made around the world to places such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.

The 2010 Maldon Oyster Festival was held at the Blue Boar Hotel on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd September from 12noon to 4pm.
